Hello,
I have been having a strange issue lately with PDF file icons turning black after a few days. The issue only happens when the files are placed on the desktop. I have already tried adjusting visual performance, trying a newer video driver, and deleting the icon cache. I have found little useful information on the net other than that. I'm hopeing someone out there has experianced this issue and knows a solution.
Thanks.
One other thought, have you tried changing Folder Options (under the View tab) to always show icons, not thumbnails (or vice versa)?

Hi Ben,
try the following steps.
Right click on the desktop to bring up the 'properties' or in Win 7, 'Screen Resolution'. Reduce the resolution from 32 bit to 16... when asked if you want to keep the change, answer affirmatively.
I've had a few users post this question and it is an Operating System issue, it would help to know what OS you are running, but this seems to be a Windows only concern. The icons database can get corrupted and cause the black icons. There are a couple of recommended fixes:
- Go to your User folder, Documents and Settings \Local Settings\Application Data.
- Delete the file IconCache.db (this is a hidden file, so make sure you have on Show hidden files and folders)
- After you delete the file, restart your computer.
If it is not the icons that have turned black, but the area around the icons, this is the fix:
Kelly,
It's Windows 7 Professional 64 bit SP1. I have already tried clearing the IconCache.db as you have described with no effect. Also, its the icon itself, not the area around it.
After more research this issue seems related to the Windows 7 themes. Switching the theme will bring them back for a time, but they may turn black again. I'm still researching, but it seems related to DLL files that get corrupt (if the icon database doesn't fix it).
It also seems isolated to files that are stored on the Desktop, not files in My Documents, etc.
I'll let you know if I find another fix.
Are all of your File Associations for PDF sent to Adobe Reader, or Acrobat?
Do you have any non-Adobe PDF Viewers or Creators on that machine, such as PDF XChange viewer?

Kelly,
Thank you. That fixed the issue.

Kelly,
You solution is perfect! I was looking for a solution for this pdf issue for the last few months.
I experienced the same issue, but found it only occurs with PDF's that were images, such as scanned to PDF. When I OCR'd the PDF and saved it, the icon no longer appeared black.
You can search for the desktop.ini file and deleting it, which will then refresh and make it appear normal.
Go to "Folder Options", "View" and check|| uncheck depending on the current condition "Always show icons, never thumbnails" - it should solve the issue. I've found it after trying everything else :)
Kind regards,
Kalin Tashev
This is a problem under Windows 8 as well, and the solution is the same.
I had the same issue and changing it from thumbnail to icon worked. But then my picture thumbnails showed up as the icon, rather than the picture's thumbnail. So I changed it back and I have the black pdf icons all over my desktop again. Is there not a fix that will address the desktop separate from the picture library?
I had the same problem as Saintly Jim. I unchecked the option 'Display file icon on thumbnails' in the Control Panel>Folder Options>View menu. This seems to have fixed both the black icon and displaying picture thumbnail issues.
the folder options worked like a dream for me
That recommendation fixed the problem. Thank you for the help.
Tod M., what is OCR'd? My files turned black yesterday. Still black today. Then turned back to original without my doing anything. Strange.
Thank you so much. This resolved the issue and my Client can now be happy!!!!!
Above solution isn't a fix, it's more a work arround! As some user already wrote, changing folders view settings from thumbnails to icons will ''fix'' the PDF folders issue but will also affect all the other folders such as pictures in which thumbnails will be no longer available as well.....really anoying!!
Thank you very much. ........also solved same problem for us . The simple solutions are the best and seems the most capable people like yourself offer them. We never actively made that change so something else caused the change. My question is : Does trying another pdf program as a trial and then uninstall it modify some settings on our system . We tried 3 programs before deciding on Foxit PDF pro which we love. Apparently and unfortunate many programs that are tried out and then deleted do not fix the changes they sometime make on our system even using uninstall. PDF programs seem the worst for this of any programs we have ever installed and uninstalled as a trial program.
